April 8, 2017

Back in February, I hosted a giveaway for mini photo sessions for Valentines. Colton contacted me and asked if I could pretend that his girlfriend had won a session and "give away" two sessions instead. His message made my *week* when I read the words, "I would like to propose with this photo session." My heart instantly exploded. Colton and I schemed together throughout the week trying to devise a plan.

We met on the Greenway Trail in Boone on February 11th. We were both so nervous the whole time trying to figure out when was best. Colton asked if I could come up with a secret word to let him know when to do it. I told him there was no way that was going to come up with the secret word because it would totally freak him out!

In the end, it worked out beautifully. Amber was completely surprised and in awe of Colton.

How did you meet?

Amber: "I moved to a new town my freshman year of high school and I didn't know a soul. My second semester of freshman year rolled around and I had a class with Colton. We never really spoke until we were put into a group together with two others to work on a class activity. I always thought he was cute but never had the opportunity to really talk to him. We did our group work and I felt like I couldn't take my eyes off of him the entire time. He was extremely shy, so nothing came of that day. Come sophomore year, he had messaged me on Facebook. He was still so shy so it only made sense that he would have to message me on Facebook rather than just speak to me in person. Haha! This was before smart phones so I had been out all day shopping with my aunt and came home to find that he had messaged me on Facebook several hours later and was so excited! Shortly after we began messaging each other we exchanged numbers and began texting. We had talked for over two months, and then one evening he decided to give me a call. My parents had my phone on a "timer" so it wouldn't work past 10pm. I remember him calling me at around 9:50 and he asked me to be his girlfriend. I was overjoyed and ran downstairs to ask my stepmom, at the time, to take my timer off. She was just as excited and agreed to take it off. Of course Colton didn't know I was jumping around smiling ear to ear like an idiot but I was just so excited!"

How long have you two been together?

Amber: "Colton and I have been together for 6 years now. Four of those years have been long distance and we have honestly done so well with it. It has definitely not always been easy, but we have made it work. These last four years apart will make being married soon and living together SO much sweeter!!"

What are you favorite things about each other?:

Amber: "My favorite thing about Colton is that it is impossible to be anything but happy when I'm around him. It is rare that we have an argument that lasts longer than 5 minutes because it is impossible for me to stay mad at him. He keeps me laughing constantly, even if I'm always the butt of the joke! (He's always picking on me) He doesn't take things too seriously where I am the absolute opposite. I worry about anything and everything, and he has always encouraged me to "live a little" and enjoy life! We have gone on endless trips and adventures and I'm so thankful that he has shown me how to let go of my worries and have fun."

Colton: "One thing I love about her, if I had to give one, is how determined and motivated she is to do well in everything she does. She is so strong willed, I know that she'll succeed at anything she puts her mind to. And with a heart as big as hers, I know that means that she'll make the world a better place"

How did you feel when Colton proposed?

Amber: "I was overwhelmed with emotions. I was so completely overjoyed that I didn't even know how to react. I laughed, cried, smiled and everything in between. It was just an incredible feeling to me that this same boy that asked me to be his girlfriend 6 years ago when we were just sophomores in high school, was then asking me to spend the rest of my life with him as his wife. I was elated at the thought of forever with this man that I love so much. I still wonder if I should pinch myself because it just doesn't seem real that I'm lucky enough to be able to commit to spending the rest of my life with such a kind-hearted, hard-working and loving man!"

Any funny stories about the two of you?

Colton: "When my family listens to the radio, we rush to name the artist in as few notes as possible, then yell, 'Drink!' to everyone else around to take a sip for losing. So I've always done it, in the car, in the mall, etc. Well, after a couple months of dating Amber, and a couple months of playing this game, we were in the car and 'Tom Sawyer' by Rush came on the radio. By the first few drum notes, I said, 'Rush, drink!' Then she looked at me and said, 'that's weird, there's a lot of songs called 'Drink'!' The look on her face when I explained why we said drink was priceless!"

What's the next step?

Amber: "I graduate from Appalachian in May with a Bachelors of Science in family and child studies and Colton will be starting an apprenticeship in August to become an electrician.

Colton and I will be getting married in the fall of 2018. This is a ways away but it allows me time to find a job that I love, as well as plan the perfect wedding and save money for a down payment on a home! We are both eager for this next chapter in our lives and we can't wait to see what the future holds."

Congrats, Amber & Colton!
